Dec 31 2007 by Our Correspondent, Daily Post
WHEN the family of a popular eisteddfod soloist decided to release a CD in her memory little did they realise that demand would exceed all expectations. Within a matter of days of the Oes o Gan (Lifetime of Song) CD being launched in early December, all 250 copies had been sold. Now, sales of the CD in memory of soprano Katie Wyn Jones, of Dinas Dinlle, near Caernarfon, are fast approaching 1,000. ‘Awyr Iach’ - a breath of fresh air from singer songwriter Ynyr Llwyd
Relaxing in the great outdoors amidst the hustle and bustle of busy life is the inspiration for Vale of Clwyd professional musician, Ynyr Llwyd’s new Welsh EP, ‘Awyr Iach’ (Fresh Air). In his latest album, the third released by Aran Records, the maturity of the singer songwriter is evident. Welsh Carols with Brass (featuring Côr Seiriol and Beaumaris Band)
Carols are not only amongst the earliest examples of Welsh song but are also popular songs, widely sung and appreciated within a living tradition. This collection draws on every aspect of this rich body of work. Early examples include 'Myn Mair' believed to have been written in the Middle Ages and 'Plygain' carols that are borne of an unique tradition within the Welsh church. Some of the great Victorian classics are here, as well as some relatively contemporary carols by our foremost composers and arrangers, including 'Doethion a Bugeiliaid' by William Mathias. Many of these arrangements with brass have been prepared especially for this recording and are performed here by two of the most distinguished musical names in Wales.

Young Songwriter Ynyr Llwyd re-establishes the role of the piano
On 6th October, Aran Records will be releasing ‘Cilfach’, the debut EP from singer/songwriter Ynyr Llwyd. The songs on the EP demonstrate his talent to compose original and contemporary material at the piano. “There are so many young bands using guitar, bass and drums,” says Ynyr, “but hardly any pianists compose in these bands. In a way, I’m trying to raise the profile of the instrument, to extend its use beyond the classical styles it’s usually associated with”.
