‘Awyr Iach’ - a breath of fresh air from singer songwriter Ynyr Llwyd

Relaxing in the great outdoors amidst the hustle and bustle of busy life is the inspiration for Vale of Clwyd professional musician, Ynyr Llwyd’s new Welsh EP, ‘Awyr Iach’ (Fresh Air). In his latest album, the third released by Aran Records, the maturity of the singer songwriter is evident. Having experimented with various styles over the years, he feels he has found his own sound whilst writing and recording these songs for the new album; acoustic rock and pop.

Young Songwriter Ynyr Llwyd re-establishes the role of the piano

On 6th October, Aran Records will be releasing ‘Cilfach’, the debut EP from singer/songwriter Ynyr Llwyd.  The songs on the EP demonstrate his talent to compose original and contemporary material at the piano. “There are so many young bands using guitar, bass and drums,” says Ynyr, “but hardly any pianists compose in these bands. In a way, I’m trying to raise the profile of the instrument, to extend its use beyond the classical styles it’s usually associated with”.

A ‘comforting’ taster of things to come

‘Cysur’ (meaning comfort or reassurance) is a gorgeous, simple song, and as the title suggests, the words offer support to someone who might be feeling a bit low.

Sometimes, when we are anxious, we can put ourselves into a negative frame of mind. This is reflected in the song by the suggestion of someone walking in the rain. Ynyr’s message in the song is that “if that’s what you want to do, then I’ll be there walking alongside you. You can wear my jacket, and I’ll hold your hand.”

A new, young artist has appeared in the world of country singing, with this first record showing that she has much to offer. There are 12 original songs here by Emma Marie, including 'Robin Goch', a song that is very familiar to Radio Cymru's listeners on Saturday and Sunday evenings.

Emma decided to write this song after a difficult time following a great loss for her and her husband. "I did a simple accompaniment on the keyboard" Emma said "and put my song on Facebook where many people responded and loved it."

'John ac Alun' release their first collection of new songs for 10 years

It's 10 years since John and Alun released their last album, and as the title suggests, this release has been hotly anticipated. The reason for this delay was partly to do with their desire to shape every aspect of the work, including the choice of songs, their interpretation and the type of production that would best suit each song.

The recording took place in Alun's own home in Tudweiliog, across a period of two years. Alun is also responsible for most of the arrangements on this record.

'Not everything's black and white' as the saying goes. There's a grey area that represents the complexity and the richness that makes our world such an interesting place. That's the message behind the title of a new CD by Ynyr Llwyd, 'Rhwng gwyn a du' (Between black and white), that is being released by Aran Records on December the 1st.
His first CD, entitled 'Cilfach', included a number of beautiful piano ballads, and received a warm reception last year.

    Elwyn Wilson Jones

This selection of gospel songs is filled with humour, irony and humility, some well known and iconic, some less familiar but equally powerful.

Elwyn Wilson Jones is known throughout Wales as a member of ‘Hogia’r Wyddfa’.  The material is close to his heart and perfectly suits the nature of his voice. The songs are in new arrangements by his good friend Dafydd Bullock, a well known composer from Llanberis whose work has been recorded, performed and broadcast internationally.

Songs are sung in Welsh and in English, accompanied by piano, bass, drums, clarinet and tuba!

  • y cyffro cover bachFrom Punk to Folk-Rock over 40 years

This year the band from Caernarfon, 'Y Cyffro', celebrates 40 years by releasing the album 'Yn y Gorllewin' (In the West). It's an opportunity to ask Derek Hughes (rhythm guitar) and Dave Roberts (lead guitar) about the group's interesting history.

Shortly after establishing in 1978 the band had the opportunity to have a gig at the National Eisteddfod, which was held in Cardiff that year. "We were supporting the 'Trwynau Coch' at the Arms Park Club" says Derek, "and that started a close relationship where we often supported them, in places like Corwen and at Talybont in Caernarfon, of course" .
